Your 62, August 23, 6 p.m., 64, September 1, 2 p.m.82 Informally advise Foreign Office that Department, while viewing with sympathy Belgian proposal that this Government exert its influence upon Peking Government with the object of obtaining for Belgium an acceptable modus vivendi, questions the advisability of such action, since it might tend to weaken the position taken by the Belgian Government on the clear cut issue as to the interpretation of Article 46 of the Sino-Belgian Treaty of 1865.
