My Dear Mr. Ambassador: Permit me to express my deep appreciation of your personal letter, which I received on Saturday. I am grateful to you for this friendly expression and you may be assured that our people will leave nothing undone to testify to their warm sympathy and their desire to aid in every practicable way the people of Japan in this hour of terrible affliction. It is in the presence of such tragic events, that the true sentiment of peoples is manifested and the bonds of friendship are made indissoluble.
