The Vice Consul in Charge at Canton (Huston) to the Secretary of State

Wu Ting-fang57 handed over seal of office to Provincial Assembly on 21st. On the same day Assembly elected Chen as Provisional Governor of Kwangtung. On 22nd Chen wired Wu Ting-fang asking [Page 724] him to persuade Sun to retire for the sake of unification. Agreement between Chen’s officers and navy. The navy will request retirement Sun and submit to Chen’s authority. Sun still at Whampoa. He hopes expeditionary force can fight way back Canton. A few followers advising him retire. Wu Ting-fang died at one this morning [of] pneumonia after brief illness.
