271. My 267, June 17, 1 p.m.56 Canton 16th and 17th, Sun with three gunboats raked bund with machine gun and rapid fire. Two American buildings hit. Consul 18th protested to Sun at Whampoa and Sun replied would again bombard but not bund unless fired on.
Chen in Waichow and will remain there for the present. His nephew told consul two gunboats willing to come over, also said forces sent to Shiuchow prevent troops in Kiating [Kiangsi?] coming to rescue.
Have advised Admiral by wireless that American citizens and property may need protection.
