War Trade Board Files: Shipping and Tonnage, Switzerland, Vol. I

The Chairman of the War Trade Board ( McCormick ) to the Swiss Minister ( Sulzer )

My Dear Mr. Minister: I am in receipt of your letter of May 31, dealing further with the points raised by our earlier correspondence on the subject of the steamers Hans Mœrsk and Oluf Mœrsk. In deference to your very urgent representations arrangements have now been made whereby these two steamers may be chartered to your Government for a round trip to Cette for the transport of a general cargo including gasoline and kerosene. In view of the fact that we have thus been able to meet your Government’s wishes in this matter, I do not feel that it is necessary to go into the other points.

I wish to express my appreciation of your very kind expressions relative to the efforts being made by my Government to insure the [Page 1628] receipt by Switzerland of necessary supplies, and the withdrawal of our objections to the charter by your Government of the two steamers above mentioned, is in accord with our general policy of demonstrating in as practicable manner as possible the sincerity of our friendship for the Swiss Government.

I am [etc.]

Vance McCormick
