Mr. Gresham to Mavroyeni Bey.

No. 9.]

Sir: Acknowledging the receipt of the note with which you have favored me under to-day’s date, I have the pleasure to inform you that the report of the intended visit of the U. S. S. San Francisco to Smyrna is correct. Having recently visited Jaffa, and gone thence td the Piraeus and Palermo to await her consort, the Marblehead, the two ships are about to cruise in the Levant, a part of the Mediterranean which I trust may be more frequently the scene of these friendly visits than has heretofore been practicable.

Accept, etc.,

W. Q. Gresham.
