Mr. Terrell to Mr. Gresham.

No. 511.]

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge your No. 414, of the 8th instant, regarding the visit of the San Francisco and Marblehead to Turkish waters. The arrival of the former at Sagua was attended with the usual courtesies, and must tend to promote cordial relations.

I answered the inquiry of the Porte on the subject that the visit of the San Francisco was a friendly one, but such vessels were designed for the protection of American interests.

I have, etc.,

A. W. Terrell.
