Sir: I have the honor to refer to dispatch No. 268, of July 24 last, relative to the claims of Messrs. Sparrow, Noland, Gait, and others for moneys due them from the Peruvian Government for their services as members of the late Hydrographic Commission on the Amazon.

I have kept the claims in view and nowinform you that I have received a communication from the minister of foreign affairs, of which I inclose copy, notifying me that the sums due will be paid through the Peruvian Government’s agents at New York. Mr. Lee, attorney for Mr. Sparrow, wrote to me on the matter last December.

I have answered the note inclosed, referring him to the Department for further information.

Señor Minister: With satisfaction I inform your excellency that through the minister of war His Excellency the President has ordered the consignees of guano in the United States to pay the members of the late Hydrographic Commission of the Amazon the sum of $11,447.63 due to them, in equal monthly payments, and the minister of the treasury has given orders for its fulfillment.
