Mr. Thompson to Mr. Gresham.

[Telegram.]

Mr. Thompson reports that a verbal note has been addressed to the minister of foreign affairs conveying to him the unanimous action taken [Page 52] by the diplomatic corps with regard to the bombardment of Rio de Janeiro and requesting that the Brazilian Government abstain from doing anything which would afford to the revolting squadron any pretext for hostile action against the city. He says that he will communicate the reply of the minister of foreign affairs and ask for instructions in the event of the request not being acceded to by the Government.
