Sir: I regret to have to inform you of the death in this city, on the 25th ultimo, of Baron de Aguiar deAndrada, envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary from Brazil on a special mission to the United States. Funeral services were held at St. Matthew’s Church on the 28th ultimo, this Department being represented by several of its officers, the Secretary of State acting as one of the pall-bearers. Two troops of cavalry attended as a guard of honor by order of the Secretary [Page 31] of War, and the Marine Band was present, rendering appropriate funeral music.
I have addressed notes to Senhor de Mendonca, the Brazilian minister, and to Gen. Castro de Cerqueira, the special envoy of Brazil, expressing the sympathy felt by the President at the death of this eminent citizen of Brazil.
