No. 339.
Mr. Daggett to Mr. Frelinghuysen.
Honolulu, July 7, 1883. (Received August 9.)
Sir: I have the honor to inform you that the 108th anniversary of our independence was celebrated with unusual display and enthusiasm in this city on the 4th instant, the natives themselves very largely participating therein. For the first time, I believe, on such an occasion, the public offices of the Kingdom were closed, and the King and his ministry attended the exercises of the day and the ball in the evening. Very many places of business were also closed, and the shipping in the harbor and at very considerable portion of the city were decorated, while during the evening the palace was conspicuously illuminated. Morning, midday and evening salutes were fired from the shore battery, and a more general celebration could have scarcely occurred in an American city.
