Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your instruction of the 3d instant, numbered 466, relating to the arrest of Mr. Henry George, and addressed to Mr. Lowell, who has not yet returned to the legation. It states the fact that Mr. George had written a letter to the President, a copy of which would be inclosed in your dispatch.

As my No. 254, of the 29th of September last, contained a copy of Lord Granville’s reply to Mr. Lowell’s communication respecting Mr. George’s arrest, it does not seem necessary that I should take any further action in this matter without additional instructions.
