No. 36.
Earl Granville to Mr. West.
Foreign
Office, March 29,
1882.
Sir: The United States minister called upon me this afternoon by appointment. I took the opportunity of handing to him my reply to his note of the 27th instant,* relative to the case of William Lane, at the conclusion of which an answer is also promised to the representations of the United States Government with regard to the American citizens detained in Ireland under the protection of person and property act.
Mr. Lowell said that this latter question was one which was causing considerable excitement in the United States.
I am, &c.,
GRANVILLE.
