No. 476.
Mr. Hitt to Mr. Morgan.

No. 174.]

Sir: I have to acknowledge the receipt of your dispatch No. 260, of the 25th ultimo, reporting that in an interview with the Mexican minister for foreign affairs it was ascertained that there was, in the present instance, no likelihood of an extension of the “zona libre,” and to express the satisfaction with which this intelligence has been received. Without manifesting too great an interest in the subject, you might say, in any informal conversation with Mr. Mariscal, that the assurances contained in your dispatch relative to “zona libre” had been received with evident satisfaction by your government.

I am, &c.,

ROBERT R. HITT,
Acting Secretary.
