Sir: I have to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of your No. 922, having reference to the high qualities which distinguished the late Baron Bettino Ricasoli, former prime minister of Italy; as also to his friendship for the United States.

The estimable qualities of Baron Ricasoli, and his attitude toward this country at a critical period in its history, combine to render his decease a subject of sympathy and regret to the good citizens of the United States.
