No. 215.
Mr. Noyes
to Mr. Evarts.
Have to-day sent dispatch to minister for foreign affairs expressing profound regrets of my government that the Government of France has seen fit to promulgate a decree forbidding importation of American pork.
Have called attention to the fact that this decree is far reaching, and the most detrimental to the commercial interests of my country, and have asked for a revocation of the order. Requested statement of circumstances [Page 396] which induced this extreme measure, and requested personal interview to-morrow. Will protest more firmly if facts and attitude of French Government seem to warrant. Decree professedly based on inspection of meat, and recommendation of board of health.
