Sir: Your dispatch No. 182 of July 16 last, reporting your further steps in the matter of the Danish Telegraph Company’s monopoly scheme has been received.

Your letter to Prince Kung and your efforts to prevent the grant of the telegraph monopoly of the Chinese coast are approved. Such a monopoly would be prejudicial to our interests and contrary to our idea of the true interests of China.
