No. 497.
Mr. Evarts to Señor Navarro.

Sir: Referring to the Department’s note to you of the 23d ultimo, regarding certain unofficial rumors of intended invasion of Mexican territory by raiding parties, and wherein were quoted the telegraphic instructions to the United States military authorities to prevent any violation of the neutrality laws by armed forces, I have now the honor to communicate to you, for the information of the government you represent, that I am advised, by a letter from the War Department of the 8th instant, that the forces which General Marquez had collected had been disbanded in consequence of the action of our military authorities.

Should your government receive any information of any movement [Page 786] of General Marquez towards a renewal of his projected invasion, it will be the desire of this government promptly to take measures to frustrate it.

Accept, &c., &c.

WM. M. EVARTS.
