No. 165.
Mr. Fish to Sir Edward Thornton,

Sir: 1 have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 15th instant, making reference to your communication of the 20th of [Page 208] July last, in regard to the indignity to the flag of the United States on the occasion of the seizure of the American fishing-schooner the James Bliss, and inclosing copies of a further dispatch and of its inclosure, which you had received from the Governor-General of Canada on the subject, from which it appears that the officer who committed the offense will be reprimanded.

It affords me pleasure to assure you of the satisfaction with which the disposition of the matter which has thus been made, is viewed by this Government.

I have the honor to be, with the highest consideration, sir, your obedient servant,

HAMILTON FISH.
