Sir: In reply to your note of yesterday, I have the honor to inform you that as soon as it was announced to Her Majesty’s government that the United States Government was prepared to carry out the survey of [Page 200] the northwest boundary between the Lake of the Woods and the Rocky Mountains, and that Mr. Archibald Campbell was appointed as commissioner for that purpose, Captain Cameron was also appointed in the same character on the part of Her Majesty’s government. The preparation of the necessary instruments was at once taken in hand, and Captain Cameron was instructed to proceed to Washington for the purpose of putting himself in communication with Mr. Campbell, with a view to arranging the plans for their future proceedings.
