No. 151.
Sir Edward Thornton to Mr. Fish.

Sir: With reference to your note of the 11th instant, I have the honor to inform you that, in reply to a telegram which I addressed to Earl Granville, his lordship has instructed me to announce to you that Captain Cameron, of the royal artillery, will be appointed Her Britannic Majesty’s commissioner to survey the northwest boundary, and to add that Her Majesty’s government would be glad to learn the views of the Government of the United States as to the commencement of the operations.

If it should appear to you expedient, orders would be given to Captain Cameron to proceed to Washington for the purpose of making the necessary arrangements in concert with the commissioner who may be appointed on the part of the Government of the United States. I have, &c,

EDWD. THORNTON.
