Inhabitants of St. Maurice

[Translation.]

Mr. President: The eminent man who fell by the murderous hand of the infamous villain Booth, at the moment his soul winged its flight to the celestial regions, left regrets and profound grief in our hearts. The atrocious crime of which Mr. Abraham Lincoln was the victim has filled us with indignation and horror.

We regret the great loss to the North—the loss of a great, generous, and noble-heart, who did so much for the abolition of slavery, for all his aims were to do good to his fellow-man. Yet we hope that the Americans of the North will finish the great work of the noble martyr, whose motto was, “Liberty, equality and fraternity.

Such is the sincere wish of the undersigned citizens of St. Maurice.
