Mr. Seward to Mr. Campbell

No. 9.]

Sir: Information has been communicated to this department by the Secretary of the Navy that the steamer Wachusett, commander N. Collins, on her recent passage home from the coast of Brazil, had occasion to touch at the island of Saint Bartholomew, in the West Indies, for supplies. Commander Collins reports that every facility was afforded for the accomplishment of the object, notwithstanding the Wachusett at the time had a case of varioloid on board. The civility and courtesy of his excellency the governor of the island are highly appreciated, and it is deemed proper that you should make suitable acknowledgments therefor to the Swedish government.

I am, sir, your obedient servant,

WILLIAM H. SEWARD.

James H. Campbell, Esq., &c., &c., Stockholm.
