Sir: I have to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of the 18th ultimo, No. 80, which is accompanied by a copy of a letter from Mr. Hice, United States consul at Spezzia, published in Galignani’s Messenger, in defence of Commodore Craven’s courage in the late affair with the ram Stonewall off the port of Lisbon. Mr. Seward’s attention will be called to the subject.
