Mr. Hunter to Sir F. Bruce

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of yesterday, transmitting a copy of a despatch of the 21st instant from her Britannic Majesty’s [Page 138] consul at New York, enclosing copies of a resolution adopted at a meeting of British residents of New York, for the purpose of expressing their sympathy and condolence upon the occasion of the national bereavement caused by the assassination of the late President. I received at the same time the sealed packet addressed to Mrs. Lincoln, which, in compliance with your request, shall be forwarded to her.

I must beg permission to assure you that the earnest expressions of sympathy and condolence contained in Mr. Archibald’s despatch, and in the resolution referred to, will be received by the widow and family of the deceased, and by the government and people of the United States, as an acceptable tribute to his memory, and a truthful manifestation of the sentiments of a large and highly respectable body of her Majesty’s subjects.

I have the honor to be, with the highest consideration, sir, your obedient servant,

W. HUNTER, Acting Secretary.

Hon. Sir Frederick W. A. Bruce, &c., &c., &c.
