237. Letter From President Carter to Egyptian President Sadat1

To President Sadat:

In accordance with our discussion this morning,2 the documents have been handled in the following manner:

a) Only in the Hebrew text of the Treaty, the words “Gulf of Eilat” have been added in parentheses following the words “Gulf of Aqaba.”

b) Following Camp David procedure as you suggested, I have added a notation on my copy and the Israeli copy of the joint letter as follows: “I am informed that the expression ‘West Bank’ is understood by the Government of Israel to mean ‘Judea and Samaria’.” No notation will be made on the Egyptian copy of the letter.3

I appreciate your helping me to resolve this final problem.

Sincerely yours,

Jimmy Carter
