34. Editorial Note

On April 11, 1974, three members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command attacked the Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona near the border with Lebanon. The PFLP–GC members killed eighteen Israeli civilians in an apartment building, and all three attackers were later killed that day by Israeli forces in a shootout. (New York Times, April 12, 1974, p. 65) On April 12, Israel launched retaliatory attacks against six Lebanese villages bordering Israel and destroyed the houses of residents suspected of sheltering Arab guerrillas.
