  • Department of State
    • Indexed Central Files. Through January 1963, the Department of State continued to use the decimal central file system. In February 1963, the Department changed to a subject-numeric central file system. For the period January 1961-January 1963, documents in classes 200 (protection of interests), 300 (international organizations and conferences), 400 (trade relations), 500 (cultural relations), 600 (international relations), 700 (internal political and national defense affairs), 800 (internal economic and social affairs), and 900 (communications, transportation, science) were searched for decimal combinations involving U.S. relations with North Africa (country nos. 51S and 70 through 73) and Sub-Saharan Africa (nos. 45A through 45X, 70A through 70X, 75 through 79). Files covering the African relationships of the United States (no. 11), the United Kingdom (no. 41), and France (no. 51) were also examined.
    • Other files and related subfiles searched for relevant materials for this period include 033 (official visits); 110.11 through 110.15 (Department of State senior officials’ files); and 123 (Department of State personnel files). Other documents were located through pursuing cross-references and referenced telegrams.
    • In the February-December 1963 central files, the major files searched included AID (aid), DEF (defense affairs), ORG (organization and administration), POL (political affairs and relations), REF (refugees and migration), SOC (social conditions), and SP (space vehicle tracking) for Africa (AFR), Algeria (ALG), Angola (ANG), Libya (LIBYA), Ethiopia (ETH), Ghana (GHANA), Guinea (GUIN), Morocco (MOR) Mozambique (MOZ), Portugal (PORT), the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (RHOD & NYAS), Somalia (SOMALI), South Africa (S AFR), South West Africa (SW AFR), and Tunisia (TUN).
