234. Telegram From the Embassy in Poland to the Department of State0
696. USUN information for Lodge. Beam–Wang Talks.
83rd meeting one hour forty minutes.1 Wang led off with brief statement protesting alleged use US-supplied poison gas by GRC and demanding discussion US withdrawal from Taiwan area. I responded with sharp attack on ChiCom shelling Quemoy and concocting of poison gas charge along lines Deptel 560.2 Wang then read lengthy statement making [Page 483] usual accusations US interfering in Chinese internal affairs and endeavoring create two Chinas. I responded with material showing international character of dispute and drawing analogy to situation other divided countries as set forth reference telegram. Wang replied denying applicability of analogy and in rather abusive language charging US continuing practice provoking civil war in China which it had engaged in for past century. I rebuked Wang for abusiveness of language following which he somewhat milder but that nothing new to offer. I proposed next meeting Tuesday November 25, 2 p.m. to which Wang agreed.
