475. USUN for Lodge. BeamWang Talks. Today’s meeting one hour 45 minutes.1 Wang asked lead off to which I agreed and he read statement covering same familiar ground he covered last meeting, adamantly rejecting ceasefire, accusing US of ulterior motives and insisting on US withdrawal forces from area could relieve tension, no significant alternative tone or language from that adopted last meeting. I responded with brief rebuttal several specific points, then read prepared statement based Department’s 329.2 Wang made vigorous rebuttal but said nothing new. Brief further exchange brought meeting to close. I did not mention we would present new draft next meeting as there seemed no necessity tip [Page 271] our hand. Wang proposed Monday afternoon. I countered with Monday morning as more convenient and we agreed on Tuesday September 30, 10 a.m.
