357. Editorial Note

On October 25, Admiral Holloway reported to the Chief of Naval Operations that all United States military forces had been withdrawn from Lebanon, and that the operation was “completed”. (CINCSPECOMME telegram 251221Z; National Archives and Records Administration, RG 218, JCS Files) The Army Attaché in Lebanon reported that the departure of the last of the U.S. troops passed quietly and without incident. He noted that the “country continues calm with Beirut again a thriving commercial center.” (USARMA telegram CX 357, October 28; ibid.) The withdrawal of British troops from Jordan began on October 20, and the airlift of the main body of paratroopers from Amman began on October 25.
