294. Editorial Note

At a meeting of the National Security Council on November 22, Allen Dulles commented on developments in Indonesia as follows:

“Mr. Dulles indicated that the strength of the Communist Party in Java had increased to a point where the Communists were the strongest party in that island. As a result, the Communists were becoming increasingly bold. Soekarno was about to leave for South America and wished to stop in the United States on his way back home. Meanwhile, dissidence in the outer islands continues.
