At dinner with the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister on March 21, I informed them, in accordance with the Secretary’s instructions, that Ambassador Richards had that day told the Turks that the United States would be willing to join the Baghdad Pact Military Committee, if invited to do so by the members. I read them the substance of Ambassador Richards’ telegram reporting his conversation with the Turkish Prime Minister.2

    On March 22 during a news conference at Bermuda, Press Secretary Hagerty announced that the United States through the Richards Mission had advised members of the Baghdad Pact of its willingness to join the Military Committee of the Pact.
