818. UK Embassy reports French have decided join US–UK démarche to Israel and Jordan re border measures and have urged two tactical moves: (1) that Israel Government be informed of fact of démarche Amman re border measures and prospective similar approach Israel this subject; (2) that reaction UNSYG be sought on measures UN could implement unilaterally. UK Foreign Office has agreed these moves and instructed UK missions Tel Aviv and New York proceed accordingly.

Embassy should indicate to UK and French Embassies Tel Aviv that US associates itself with UK–French advising Israel Government per (1) above with earnest hope IG will keep matter confidential.

USUN will be advised shortly re joining in UK–French approach UNSYG per (2) above.
