Position Paper Prepared in the Department of State for the United States Delegation to the Resumed Seventh Session of the General Assembly
restricted
[Washington,] August 6, 1953.
Chinese Representation
united states position
- 1.
- We will vigorously oppose any move to unseat representatives of the Chinese National Government or to seat Chinese Communists.
- 2.
- Since the General Assembly, at the beginning of the current session
(October 1952) approved the credentials of the representatives of the
Government of the Republic of China and decided to postpone
consideration of all proposals on this subject for the duration of the
session, we will deal with any attempt to revive the issue by:
- a.
- having it ruled out of order; or
- b.
- having it treated as a motion to reconsider a previous decision of this session—an action requiring a two-thirds majority under the Assembly’s rules.
discussion
The tactical details will have to be worked out in advance by our Delegation with President Pearson and with friendly Delegations.
