Editorial Note

On December 1, 1954, the Cabinet Committee on Minerals Policy submitted its final report to President Eisenhower. Seventeen pages in length, it recommended a complete review of United States stockpile objectives, a review of the supply and demand situation for each strategic metal and mineral in order to assure adequate domestic production, the establishment of a mobilization base for metals and minerals at a reasonable level, and the implementation of various steps toward the development of domestic mineral resources, such as investment tax credits, financial assistance to private industry, mapping, direct governmental exploration, and mineral research. Finally, it recommended establishing closer contacts between the mining industry and the government in order “to give force and effect to policies recommended” in the [Page 1258] report. A copy of the report is in the Eisenhower Library, White House Central files, Confidential files. For a summary of the report and its recommendations, see Department of State Bulletin, December 27, 1954, pages 988–990.
