No. 447

Editorial Note

During the Tripartite Foreign Ministers meeting at Washington September 10–14, Secretary Acheson met with Foreign Secretary Morrison to consider problems of special interest to Anglo-American relations. On September 10 and 11 they discussed European problems, the Middle East including Egypt, Iran and Kashmir, the Far East with particular reference to Korea, and East-West trade. For the records of these two meetings, see U.S.-U.K. MINs 1 and 2, September 10 and 11, volume III, Part 1, pages 1228 and 1238.

At the same time another in the series of informal Anglo-American political-military conversations took place. At this meeting Bradley, Matthews, and Nitze discussed with Franks and Elliot the use of British bases and the atomic bomb, and attempted to define the terms under which the two countries would consult in the event of a general war. For a memorandum of this conversation, dated September 13, see volume I, page 883.
