The United States Representative at the United Nations (Austin) to the Acting Secretary of State

1237. From the Secretary. At meeting with Bevin and Couve de Murville86 today, former referred to our discussions of Chinese situation last month, and said he did not believe there was anything more we can do at this time. I pointed out that we had agreed to move slowly and not to take action without consulting each other. I added [Page 104] that Chinese Communist government had been set up only few days ago and there seemed no reason for haste on our part.

Bevin mentioned that State Department was being kept fully informed in regard to plans of British Ambassador to China.87 [Acheson.]
