3080. Learned following from Chilean Ambassador re rupture:

Matter of firing on Soviet Embassy Santiago having been regulated satisfactorily Ambassador believed Chile would now follow Brazil’s example and Ambassador planning advise Chilean Government against any precipitous move.

First news of break came this morning when American correspondent called Chilean Secretary to ask confirmation BBC radio report. Ambassador did not receive telegram announcing break till about noon. He does not know who will represent interests. I informed him I also have no information.

Ambassador very perturbed because of family situation involving his son’s Soviet wife who for some time has been refused exit visa. He most anxious take her but fears he will be forced leave her behind.
