The Chargé in Brazil ( Key ) to the Chief of the Division of Brazilian Affairs ( Dawson )
Dear Allan: I have just received your letter of December 19, 194770 and we are all greatly relieved to learn that the question of [Page 420] offering the lend-leased war vessels to Brazil has been shelved for the present.
I was also interested to learn that the “nominal” price of $10,000 has been placed on each of the German vessels which were turned over to the Brazilians. This is probably $9,999 more than the Brazilians expect to pay but maybe I am wrong about this and in any event the value of these ships probably considerably exceeds the price you mention. I shall, of course, keep the figure under my hat for the present.
