The Acting Secretary of State to the Embassy in Argentina
restricted
Washington, October 7,
1947—6 p.m.
945. Deptel 921, Oct 1 and urtel 1203, Oct 2. Whereas Dept continues leave matter transmittal La Prensa message your discretion it offers following observations your consideration.
- 1)
- Embassy records doubtless show this does not constitute precedent Secretary having previously sent such messages to La Prensa. Conceivable public repercussions press and elsewhere resulting from omission message might be more detrimental than repercussions Perón Govt from inserting message. This might be especially true if messages received from high personages other Govts.
- 2)
- Suggest you consult your British and other colleagues view to determining what action officials their Govts, who have perhaps been similarly approached, contemplate taking.
- 3)
- Dept aware Secretaries Defense, Treasury, Agriculture, and Commerce received requests to send messages. All have been asked send statements through Dept. Altho offices other Cabinet heads report Secretaries have not received requests, other high US officials may have received them and may send direct communications to La Prensa.
Pls telegraph your final decision.
