The Department of State to the British Embassy

Aide-Mémoire

Reference is made to the British Embassy’s aide-mémoire of June 16, 1947,16 which recounts recent developments with regard to Dutch-Indonesian relations and inquiries whether the United States Government would be prepared to make a joint offer with His Majesty’s Government of their good offices to bring the Dutch and Indonesians together again to seek agreement by peaceful means.

The Government of the United States has dispatched telegrams to the American Ambassador at The Hague and to the American Consul General at Batavia, instructing them to make representations to the Dutch Government and to the authorities of the Indonesian Republic respectively. The United States Government is not prepared to join with the British Government in an offer of good offices. The United States Government sincerely hopes, however, that its representations at The Hague and in Indonesia will have the effect of bringing the Dutch and Indonesians together again to discuss and seek a solution of the problem confronting them.
