The Secretary of State to the Embassy in France 1
secret

1847. Ref. London’s tel 2737, May 14, reptd Paris as 296. Dept agrees Brit views regarding unrealistic nature bilateral French-Czech and French-Polish pacts now being contemplated. Not considered desirable that you make formal representations to French Govt in this respect. You may however reflect this view in informal conversations with French officials adding in our opinion the proposed four power [Page 715] disarmament treaty would afford far greater protection to French and such negotiations as contemplated might adversely affect possibility of securing agreement upon the treaty.
