596. Legtels 629, Nov. 16,75 and 651, Dec. 5. Re notes exchanged Nov. 13 between FonOff and BritLeg on abolition Mixed Courts.
Dept prepared accept extension jurisdiction Lebanese National Courts and considers views agreed upon above notes acceptable as practical solution questions treated therein. At same time Dept requests assurance from Lebanese Govt, that in matters of personal status non-Moslem American citizens in Lebanon will be governed by their own national law which would be applied by Lebanese Civil Courts. However, as stated in Deptel 512, Oct. 25,76 Dept unwilling consider abrogation capitulatory jurisdiction separate from treaty.77
