The Appointed Ambassador in China (Hurley) to Messrs. Mao Tse-tung and Chou En-lai 7
[Chungking,] 20 December,
1944.
Thank you for your letters of December 16th, and the verbal message brought by Colonel Barrett. I am very glad that you have not closed the door to settlement, and I find that the Chinese Government is also keen to continue negotiations. I cannot tell you more until I see one of you personally, but if General Chow En-lai will come to [Page 745] Chungking again I believe that chances of success along the general lines of your proposals are brighter than ever before. Kind regards.
