The Ambassador in China (Gauss) to the Secretary of State
[Received April 9—9:30 a.m.]
622. Reliably informed that British correspondent who threatened to expose Votaw’s background if latter should represent AP on Yenan trip (Embassy’s 556, March 30 and Department’s 421, April 1, 10 a.m. [p.m.] expressed to Moosa, local AP correspondent, strong criticism of such choice and that Moosa has now canceled Votaw’s appointment as AP representative on trip. Votaw will probably make trip as representative of “other organizations”.
Foregoing confirmed indirectly by Moosa who has informed officer of Embassy [that] Yenan trip too long for regular AP staff member but that while Votaw only available person to represent AP his connection with Information Ministry makes him unsuitable.
