The Ambassador in the Soviet Union (Standley) to the Secretary of State
[Received 8:42 p.m.]
545. Attention Under Secretary Welles from Davies. Referring your cable Sulzberger.56 Personally took matter up with Stalin and Molotov last night at Kremlin and went as far as I could. Hope it will be effective. For obvious reasons proprieties could not press it [Page 657] but am confident enlisted their interest. Mission here could not have been more satisfactory. They all have greatest admiration and respect for President and feel kindly toward us which was translated into their expressions of consideration for me. Leaving for home directly. [Davies.]
- The Under Secretary of State had requested Mr. Davies to seek an interview with Premier Stalin for Arthur H. Sulzberger, publisher of the New York Times and a director of the American Red Cross, who planned to visit the Soviet Union in a few weeks.↩
