The Consul General at Algiers (Wiley) to the Secretary of State
[Received 10:40 p.m.]
1057. From Murphy. According to reports received last night from members of the French Committee, the discussions are proceeding in an orderly fashion and center at the present around nominations for secretariat posts. I shall report as soon as final decisions are taken.
[Page 139]De Gaulle has agreed that Giraud may retain the post of Commander-in-Chief. He has informed various persons here to that effect, and the information is corroborated by Monnet. The political atmosphere in Algiers has improved during the past 48 hours, but there are still major decisions of policy to be taken by the Committee including de Gaulle’s probable attempt to gain control of information services and resistance organizations.
