The Minister Counselor of Embassy in the Soviet Union (Thurston) to the Secretary of State

551. Embassy’s telegram 548, June 19.94 The press of the past several days has contained a large number of news items giving favorable comment which has appeared in the foreign press upon the visit of Molotov to England and the United States95 and upon the Anglo-Soviet treaty and the Soviet-American Lend-Lease agreement.96 Descriptions of meetings held in various parts of the Soviet Union similarly praising; these developments have also been frequent Articles have appeared tracing the history of Soviet-American relations during the past year, favorably commenting upon the American war potential, citing instances in demonstration of the long history of Russian-American friendship as well as of Soviet-American friendship, et cetera.

The tone of the material which has been published is unusually generous and a good deal more seems to be made of Soviet-American relations than of Anglo-Soviet relations. Nearly all the articles published, besides emphasizing the urgent and vital importance of the formation of a second front in Europe this year strongly imply the belief that this will actually take place.
