126. American interests—Japan. Department’s 13, January 3, 7 p.m. Swiss Foreign Office note January 12 expresses appreciation for message regarding Zech [Albert] Sidler’s helpfulness at Manila and states it has immediately requested Swiss Legation Tokyo by telegraph to instruct Consul to continue as far as possible his services on behalf of American interests. Foreign Office, however, advises Legation Tokyo has reported that telegraphic services between Japan and the Philippines have been temporarily suspended but it is hoped that a regular service can be reestablished before end of this month so that Swiss Minister Tokyo⁷⁹ will then be able to transmit his instructions.
